tour: CREMONA, STRADIVARI and The Stradivari Foundation
14/09/2010 - 31/12/2011 - CREMONA
CREMONA, STRADIVARI and The Stradivari Foundation
This tour will help you uncover piece by piece the history and the spirit of Cremona, the life of Stradivari through the places associated with music, till the Contemporary Stringed Instruments. The discovery will lead you to experience some memorable evenings listening to the great music.
FIRST DAY – Arrival and guided tour of Cremona, starting from the historical centre: Square Cathedral, the main square of the city ; the
Torrazzo, symbol of Cremona, is 111 mt high and it is the tallest bell tower in Italy; the
Cathedral, one of the most religious sights in Northern Italy, the
Baptistery and the
Town Hall. The
Municipal Building which
houses one of the main Strings Collection in the world. These instruments outline the history of the greatest violin making school ever known, born and developed in Cremona from the first half of the Sixteenth Century to the first half of the Eighteenth Century. At the end of the tour, short
live performance with one of the Collection violins.
The visit continues in the afternoon with
Ponchielli Theatre, rebuilt in neoclassical style in 1806. It is one of the oldest Italian theatres, with very precious decoration inside. Musical evening with private operatic performance or musical aperitif with opera arias. Dinner at a restaurant featuring typical Cremona cuisine. Overnight.
SECOND DAY – Breakfast. Morning visit to the Permanent Exhibition of
The Stradivari Foundation of
Contemporary Stringed Instruments. The collection, which is now composed of approximately 30 instruments, is housed at the headquarters of the foundation , Palazzo Pallavicino Ariguzzi.
The Triennial International Contest for Stringed Instruments, which, given its worldwide importance, is a veritable Olympics of violin making, started in 1976 and in 2009 has hold its 12th edition. Through the years, this contest has allowed the Stradivari Foundation to assemble a
Permanent Collection of International Contemporary Stringed Instruments by purchasing every instrument that won a gold medal in the contest.
It should be noted that gold medals (one for each of four categories: violin, viola, cello and bass) are given not to the best instrument in the contest, but only to those instruments that reach, according to a jury of five luthier masters, five musicians and a non-voting president, a true level of excellence, both from a construction and a musical standpoint.
The instruments are regularly played by the keepers of the collection and are lent to soloists and small orchestras for special concerts in Italy and abroad.
It is thus a truly unique collection of great instruments, representing the very best contemporary stringed instrument making has to offer. End of the tour and departure.
